I was watching an episode of some show on HGTV (don't shoot me) and as the buyers were walking through the front door they mentioned how they like it. It was of course a red door. Don't know how red front doors became so popular (probably because its bold), but this front door was hideous. Sure it was red but the paint job was a bit to be desired.
We all know the front door is a first impression and should be at its best. I have had white doors on every home I have ever owned but one and that door, which was a double door entry was pointed a blue color, sort of like a cornflower blue, it matched the shutters. I always wished they had not ruined the original natrual wood with the paint. I was always going to paint it white.

I not sure if I would paint my door just because Feng Shui, suggested I should. What I can say there is a merit to coordinate the proper coloring. The front is what draws you near so it should have an inviting element. It also is a focal point and accent. With all the colors available, painting it white is just lazy and does nothing for the appearance. Also painting over a natural wood door is a crime in my opinion, and it has nothing to do with being green or not being green being green.
Mine's white right now. We need a new front door so until that happens it's just hanging there all boring. Depending on the house, I like colorful front doors.
Winston, I agree with most of your insight except painting it white is just lazy - haha!
Eric, Mine is white too, I have white trim, on a light grey/green with a red brick exterior chimney. If my house was white I would paint the door a color - I am trying to keep the house true to the 1940 era.
Mine is a deep red. I read a while ago that red is a great front door color.
Mine is black...but I live in a condo and I don't have a choice :-)
Erica, it seems to be very popular - if it goes with the house color I am sure it POPS!
Cindy, I like black doors - in-fact mine would look good black. with a brass kick plate.
Jo: My front door is a cream beige....I too ive in a condo and can't change the color. I love real wood grained front doors. But when I am listing a home, I suggest the owners spruce up their front door with a new coat of paint if it is already painted....
Jo,
Repainting the front door is one of the easiest fixes a seller can make to spruce things up. Mine is red too by the way.
Rich
Mine was a deep red when we bought the house. Now it's black. I like black. -Kasey
Gwynn, I agree a fresh coat of paint prior to listing is a great idea! Even just a cleaning can really help most!
Richard, Wow, see lots of red doors!
Kasey, Black can be a nice color too depending on the base color.
Jo, We just read another blog post that red is the color of choice for feng shui, but only if it has a southern exposure...who knew ~ but changing the door color is an easy fix when getting a house ready to be put on the market!
The Fen Shui article said my front door should be blue or black. My moss green front door faces N/NW.
What a goodidea to take a photo of the front, then cut out the door and put the paint samples behind. BUT . . . he took the photo of the front door in full shade. The colors night have looked totally different in full light. I painted my front door about two years ago. I love the color. Great post (suggested)
Larry/Shelia, Red sure is the go to color!
Shirley, I love the moss green colors.
Carla, I think full light would be more accurate. I had no idea GMC had this type of series - I have been enjoying all their videos. - thanks!
Painting a door red is a traditional color for welcome. In China, it's tradition to paint the front door red before the new year, to invite good luck and happiness.
In Catholocism, the red door on a chapel symbolized the blood of christ, and other martyrs, to signify that the ground beyond the door (inside the church) was holy, and a sanctuary from physical and spiritual evils.
In Ireland, front doors are painted red to ward-off ghosts and evil spirits.
People have been painting their doors red for quite some time.
Lori, very very interesting thank you for sharing!
